Norah likes to help out and has more interest in helping in the kitchen. Cooking is another way for us to spend quality time together while she is developing new sensory skills. For example, introduction to new smells, listening to directions, encouraging her to count, and improving her fine motor skills. Not to mention, encourage her to try new foods.
Since dinnertime can be quite chaotic at times, the opportunity for Norah and I to cook together may not take place. Luckily, we were able to find the ultimate kitchen hack that has made those opportunities transpire thanks to Pop and Cook.
Pop and Cook picks their products from the fields at peak freshness. It’s then processed and flash freeze into pre-measured trays within 90 minutes after harvest. In addition, it has a shelf life of 2 years…yep you heard it right! This makes for having fresh herbs available all year round, without the waste. I hate buying fresh herbs because it’s always more than I need and eventually goes bad over time.
We love Pop and Cook and how it makes it easy for the kids to get involved in meal prep. Without needing to wash, peel, or chop it makes for fewer transitions and for Norah to grasp step by step instructions better. Also, there’s no need for knives! Eventually, I would love for Norah to learn how to use a knife, but with Gideon running around most of the time, I want to provide the undivided attention she needs to use the knife safely. In like manner, no more tears from cutting onions!
In my efforts to offer healthy snacks to the kids, I thought it would be a great idea to make our own hummus. Hummus is a favorite in our home and it’s the easiest way to introduce more vegetables to the kids. Norah was able to prep the hummus without my help, except for the blender, of course. The Pop and Cook garlic cubes fit perfectly into her little hands and they didn’t leave an overwhelming smell.
- 2 (15 oz) cans of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
- juice of 1 lemon
- 5-6 Pop and Cook Garlic Cubes
- ½ teaspoon of cumin
- ¼ teaspoon of paprika
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- salt & fresh black pepper
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Enjoy with your favorite vegetables or chips.
